The Hazel Perspective... A Journey About Adoption
When my friend Caroline first told me she was adopted, I didn't necessarily have a reaction. I wasn't shocked, I wasn't surprised, to me she was still the Caroline that has become of my best friends over the past 4 years but this isn't about me. This is about Caroline and the several other adoptees who have gone through a similar experience and are brave enough to find out more about their past and share their stories.
To Caroline, she said that whenever she told someone that she was adopted it felt like she was telling them that she 'coming out of the closet'. She wondered whether they would see her differently, she knew that they would have questions, she wondered whether by discovering this about herself it would answer questions that had long been on her mind. It for all these reasons that she created The Hazel Perspective (THP).
‘THP’ is a play on the human hazel eye colour, representing the grey area when it comes to talking about adoption as well as the ability for everyone to begin to see life through an adoptee’s perspective, the title also holds sentimental value as Hazel is the name of Caroline's birth mother.
I was one of the first few people that Caroline shared her story with and not only was I really honoured, but it honestly was such an emotional experience. Reading her story, which she is now sharing with all of you guys, was so touching it opened up a side to Caroline that I never knew existed and definitely pulled on your heart strings. Not in a way that comes across cliche or Hollywood washed but in a way that connects you to a real person, going through a real emotional experience that has so many ups and downs. One thing that Caroline gets across in her story is how her discovery has connected some dots for her but it hasn't take away from the huge role that her adoptive plays in her life, how lucky she was to have been taken in by them and the fact that they have made her who she is today.
THP takes you on a young woman's journey and hopes to answer a lot of the questions that people have when it comes to adoption, with Caroline's intention being to;
Make everyone comfortable with talking about such things and that includes those who may not be adopted or have experienced care themselves, but wish to become educated in the matter.
I've included a link to THP below that you can use to explore her page or simply pay a visit, either way thank you so much to Caroline for sharing this with us and I hope it touches so many people out there in the world.
